Review your media contracts. Review all of your contracts with your media outlets and other vendors. Chances are, you can negotiate your rates to be more favorable in 2010 given the scarcity of advertisers these days. Or, if you can’t get a lower rate, ask for freebies and “value adds” like additional ads, free color, or a promo tie-in.

Do a communications audit. Gather ALL of your organization’s communications – brochures, posters, print ads, website pages, social media profiles, email templates, forms – and put them in a room. Do they all look the same? Do they all convey the same message? Do they represent your organization and its brand well? You may be shocked at the disparate branding messages your staff put forth every day. Also, take some time to look on various social media sites and search the web to make sure that there are no “rogue” sites out there misrepresenting your brand. Then, make sure that you create a standard for your brand and that your staff knows how to implement it.

Create a plan that aligns with strategic business objectives. If your marketing plan isn’t aligned to the strategic business objectives of your company, you may as well be throwing money out the window. Do your homework – know what goals your CFO and CEO have set. Then you need to make sure that your marketing plan outlines what will be done to meet those goals. Make sure that your plan is measurable and then…measure it!

Newest PETA Campaign Goes Naked, Again

December 11th, 2009

Interesting new PETA Campaign shows scantily clad models in cages, Jenna Jameson promoting pleather and Joanna Krupa’s ads telling us to, “Be an Angel for Animals,” as well as the timeless, “I’d rather go naked, than wear fur” ad.

PETA is notorious for outrageous ads. What message do these ads really send?

Steve Dale from Steve Dale’s Pet World Blog shows you the ads and asks you to be the judge…

In the Rough

December 4th, 2009

Ah, a fresh celebrity scandal, complete with accident-scene footage, a voice mail to the supposed mistress and a days-long silence that ended with a simple plea for privacy. Tiger Woods’ recent travails are certainly a private matter, but when you are one of the world’s finest, most-respected and highly compensated athletes ever, do you have an obligation – to your fans, to your corporate sponsors, to your public – to address the situation head-on when the media is in a feeding frenzy?

Many public relations pros are weighing in on the issue, and most are saying Woods should have come out sooner and more honestly than he has to date. The situation brings to light numerous basic lessons about crisis PR, and the articles below are only the tip of the iceberg:

Christmas Cheer from Gap

December 3rd, 2009

Gap’s new holiday TV commercials feature kids and adults cheering about the holidays and what they want for Christmas. Despite some controversy from a Christian group, which was quickly resolved, Gap is sending it “cheer” on the road. With a plaid bus full of professional dancers and drummers, Gap started the tour in New York and plans to visit many major cities around the U.S.

These commercials are attention catching for sure. Although I have trouble deciphering the message, I must admit I do enjoy the ads. Talk to the Moose

As part of the Cheer Factory campaign Gap is encouraging employees at stores across the country to make their own cheer-ads and post them to their YouTube channel Gap 2009 Holiday.

Advertising’s Twitter Challenged

December 2nd, 2009

In marketing they always say be careful of how your ads are translated into other languages. Today’s young marketers have new challenges. Twitter is used very effectively by the media. Twitter seems perfect for pushing out information quickly to a mass audience. But what happens when the publisher does not think through all implications of a particular media? The below example is the best, and hilarious, example I came across. Know your media before utilizing it!!!!

Amar Toor from Switched writes, “A local TV station in Mobile, Alabama had the great idea of putting up live news tweets on their electronic roadside billboard, which featured three of the channel’s anchors. Good idea, except when the headline involved three people accused of gang rape, which ran directly opposite the trio of statically smiling broadcasters. The implication, of course, being… well, obvious”.
